Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week is held every year by the American Library Association (ALA) to promote the awareness of censorship and availability of ideas that could be blocked by the banning, and challenging of books.

ALA's website states:

“Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.”

Examples of books banned or challenged in the United States include:

Reference Renovations

Hello, everyone. Just a quick post to update everyone on what is happening in the Reference Department at Coyle Free Library. We've decided to renovate. Our goal is to become more of a roving reference department and be able to move freely about the library. We're shifting microfilm machines and removing barriers to create a more open space. We've just bought two card catalog stands to house our online card catalogs. The best part about this is that they are now handicap accessible. We also found a great new desk for our handicap computer which now allows the user to set the height. I will post pictures as soon as the renovation is complete, but please feel free to come into the library and see the new and hopefully improved department. We'd love your feedback!

Well. Our old blog was growing stagnant and I wanted to make sure that this new blog reflected the changes occurring within Franklin County Library System.

For the past few months our Facebook Fan base has been growing and patrons can find library events/programs posted on our facebook page. Feel Free to follow the link on the right or go to www.facebook.com and search for Franklin County Library System. We update fans on a weekly basis about upcoming events.

You can chat with reference librarians in Pennsylvania with the widget on the right. Reference librarians at Franklin County Library system have been working with Ask Here PA for over a year now to provide chat reference. Go to http://www.askherepa.org/ for more information.

We've begun to delve into Twitter territory. Our fan base is still small but please feel free to follow our tweets at www.twitter.com/FCLSPA.
